Yes, We Have No Banana Clips

I am about to reveal my un-coolness. I would like to know why the banana clip has become such a hated and mocked hair accessory. Although I haven’t worn one since the ‘80s, I hafta say, it worked out quite well for me. I have curly hair, and I never knew how to handle it in high school. I didn't know how to style the curls so they didn't look frizzy. There also wasn't the plethora of curly hair products that fill the drug store shelved nowadays. All the “preppie” girls had long, straight hair, which was what I ended up trying to achieve, even though my hair was always damaged and smelled burnt. If the banana clip could have stayed in fashion, I would have had a much easier time. It gave me a mane of curly locks running down the back of my head, instead of a frizzy, not-really-straight, wannabe appeal. Was it really such a bad look? Why is it lumped in with mullets and trailer parks? I can handle my hair now, so I promise not to attempt to bring back the banana, but I just wanna know what happened. Anyone?

I have no idea! I have curly hair, too, and in those days the best I could do was glop on some mousse or Dippity-Do gel and hope I didn't look like a poodle. Even the banana clip didn't help me.

Cute title! I think they're great and I for one use anything that works for me - in style or not. I don't know why these things go in and out of style, these things that work. I'll back you up if you want to start using um again! See ya.

oh I dunno... the banana clip got the bad rap in my school days because the girls who used them would take them out a million times a day, flippin' their hair and putting it back in. Seriously, it was annoying.

Actually I had a small black one that I would constantly deny was a banana clip - but it totally was.

So are you a flipper?

I don't have any idea. I never could fit one in my hair.

The banana clip was the best thing for my curly hair, seriously it gave me the best curls all the way from the top down to the bottom. Sadly it's gone now, if anyone else has noticed it one of the characters on Star Trek wears it as some sort of eyewear.

I always loved banana clips and was jealous of those who could wear them. I have fine, straight hair and they would never stay in, the hair wouldn't stay curled, AND it looked bad. So I think it must have just gone out of style d/t curl jealousy.

I blame the demise of the banana clip on that blind character from Star Trek Next Generation that looked like he wore one for glasses. It forever associated the banana clip with Trekkies. Not that there's anything wrong with Trekkies . . .

Incidentally, I have the same issue with scrunchies. There was that Sex in the City episode where Carrie dissed the scrunchy, and I was floored with my un-coolness.
